1. What is a charter school?

Charter schools are public schools that are approved by the state and run by a non-profit board. It’s open enrolment for all NC residents and if there are more applications than available spots, then we would have a lottery. Charter schools are tuition free. They are accountable to the state for student academic performances as well as finance of the school

2. What makes us a math and science school?

Our curriculum has an emphasis on science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. Our

science classrooms use hands-on, inquiry based STC (Science and Technology Concepts)

programs. All teachers integrate the use of technology within their classrooms and their curriculum.

Our classrooms are equipped with the latest technology including Smartboards. Each year our

students participate in STEM Expo and science fair.

 

TMSA offers a variety of options for advanced learners. We currently offer several high school courses

to our middle school student population including: MATH I, MATH II, MATH III, Biology, Physical Science,

Earth and Environmental Science, honors English, Microsoft Office IT Academy, Cisco Academy, and

Oracle Academy. We also offer a variety of AP courses to our high school students.

 

We pride ourselves on our rigorous and competitive academic teams that we offer here at TMSA. All of our academic teams meet after school and on the weekends and compete nationwide. We offer Math Olympiad, Science Olympiad, Chess, Odyssey of the Mind, Cyber Security, First Lego League (FLL), Future City, and Google Science Fair.

 

3. What grades are you accepting?

TMSA has been approved by the NC State Board of Education as a K-12 public charter school. We started with K-6 for 12/13 and currently accepting applications for K-10 for the 16/17 school year. We will continue adding a grade level every following year.

4. Are you accepting applications?

Yes, we are accepting applications for all grades for the 16/17 school year.  Any applications received after the deadline (04/05/16) will be placed at the bottom of the waiting list and we will contact parents as spots become available. 

5. Where is the school located? 

TMSA has purchased a new and permanent school building. The property is located at 312 Gregson Dr. Cary, NC 27511 (at the corner of Mackenan Drive and Gregson Drive). This building consists of 72,000 sq. ft. and is situated on 9.5 acres of land. 

6. Will your permanent building house K-12?

We are planning to stay in the same building until we are K-10. We are still working on the next step but we have not decided on separating the K-3 or 9-12.

8. What are the certification requirements for teachers?

All core subject teachers will be highly qualified as outlines by Federal No Child Left Behind requirements. The state requires 50% of charter school teachers to be certified. However, charter schools must follow federal policy as outlined in the No Child Left Behind (NCLB) Act for highly qualified staff. In North Carolina, pathways to acquire highly qualified status include the following:

A. NC Standard Professional I or Standard Professional II Teaching License

B. Hold a minimum of a Bachelor’s Degree

C. Demonstrate core content mastery (through passing the respective Praxis test and/or successfully completing 24 hours of related coursework)

10. Will the school serve lunch?

TMSA will serve hot lunch to its students. Students will have the option to bring their own lunch as well. Lunch will be catered by a vendor and price will be announced before the school starts.

11. When will the parents complete the enrollment?

Once the enrollment lottery is completed, we will invite parents to fill necessary forms and submit required documents. Parents will have three weeks before losing their spot.

12. When will we notify the current school?

We will notify the current school once the parent completes and signs enrollment forms. 

13. Does the school require uniforms?

14. Is there a charge for clubs or tutoring?

Required tutoring is offered to our students free of charge. Our Afterschool Enrichment program is paid.

 

15. What clubs do you offer this year?

Clubs run on a 6 session cycle.  Students can sign-up for a new club at the end of the club sessions or remain in the same club.  All clubs are held on campus here at TMSA.  At the beginning of the year we host a “Meet the Vendor” night.  This allows parents and students to go to different booths setup by each vendor and find out more about the clubs we will be offering.  However, we are constantly adding more club choices as vendors find out about our school and as we evaluate the interests of our students.  Currently we are offering the following clubs:  Chess, Drawing Clubs by Young Rembrandts, Minecraft Club, Academy for Perming Arts, Bricks for Kids, Art Club, Basketball Club, Scrabble, TGA Golf and Tennis, The Junior Executive Club, Book Club, Science Club, Writers Club, Painting Club, Master Chang’s Martial Arts, and Puzzle Club.

We also offer several academic teams that our 4th-8th grade students participate in during their 1st period Tiger TAILS class.  These teams consist of: Math Olympiad, Science Olympiad, Turkish Olympiad, and First Lego League.

16. What is the Tiger T.A.I.L.S program at your school?

This year TMSA has started a new program called Tiger TAILS. The acronym stands for Time for Activities that Inspire Learning and Success. Tiger Tails is worked into each student’s daily schedule during first period for activities in math, science, reading, technology, and foreign language. It will allow staff members to meet individual student needs in grades 4-8 for 45 minutes per day. First period classes will stimulate and encourage students, while at the same time provide opportunities to improve their academic skills. We are certain that the program will do just what it was designed to do-- inspire learning, increase students’ academic success, and provide chances for students to ROAR over their accomplishments!

17. Does school offer after-school care?

Yes, TMSA has partnered up with the YMCA for the 2015-2016 school year.  The YMCA is here at TMSA from 3:00 P.M.- 6:00 P.M.  Parents may sign their students up for 2-5 days of after-school care.  The YMCA also runs on early release days!  For more information regarding costs for the YMCA please call our front office. 

18. Do you accept Early Kindergarten Admissions?

Yes, but you will have to have your child tested prior to the beginning of the school year and the results will have to be approved by Assistant Principal.

19. Do we have any sibling preferences?

Siblings have priority.  If one child receives an invitation to enroll, then the siblings will move up the waiting list for their grade.
