TMSA Cyber-Tigers Made an Excellent Start in Their 1st Year

TMSA's Robotics Teams - the Cyber Tigers - competed on Saturday, November 23, in Walkertown NC and brought back two trophies.  Members of both the 4th & 5th grade team and the 6th & 7th grade team worked very hard this fall, and especially the past couple of weeks, preparing for this regional tournament.  Both teams represented TMSA well despite the challenges of their first year.

This year's theme was "Nature's Fury," and each team had to construct and program a robot that could perform a variety of tasks on a competition board representing the aftermath of a natural disaster.  The tasks included rescuing people and pets, moving an ambulance and truck to a desired location, and keeping a runway clear for a cargo plane to land with relief materials.  Each team also had to work on a project including a model and a skit showing how they would provide some form of preparation, response, or recovery from a natural disaster.

The teams, coached by Mr. T, Mr. Mohamad, Mr. Rahaim, Mr. Kennebrew, Mr. Das and Mr. Kokkanti travelled to the Winston-Salem area Friday night, did some final preparations at a local hotel, then were ready bright and early Saturday morning for the competition.  They practiced throughout the morning and met with groups of judges who scored them on their Project, their Core Values, and their Robot Design.

In the afternoon each team competed in three timed rounds in front of a referee.  There were a total of 22 teams at the regional tournament, and with five or six teams competing at once during each heat the gym was full of excitement. Name of the Cyber-Tigers were Nitin C., Quinn G., Aryan K., Aiden R., Urvi M., Kashi T., Anish T., Sebastian B., Aryan D., Tau K., Zachary H., Neil M., Aneesh S., Ethan K., Afif R., Bram L., Abdelrahman E. and Mustafa M.

Finally, at the awards ceremony, it was announced that the 6th & 7th grade team of Cyber Tigers won two trophies, taking 2nd place in Robot Design and 1st place in Robot Performance.  They also qualified to compete at the state tournament, which will take place on Saturday, January 11th, in Greensboro.
