Justice Newby's visit to the 4th Grade

This Tuesday, our 4th graders were able to meet with Justice Newby, a North Carolina Supreme Court Judge.

This Tuesday, our 4th graders were able to meet with Justice Newby, a North Carolina Supreme Court Judge. He spoke with the students about how our Founding Fathers came up with the justifications for declaring our independence from Great Britain and the fundamental principles they came up with, life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness (or property in the case of NC’s constitution). The children were really excited to meet him and he was kind enough to autograph a paper for each child. As we are beginning our discussions on slavery and the Civil War, it was very helpful to have the children think about these bigger ideas and how they conflicted with the very ideals that they had just fought for in the Revolutionary War. Big thanks to Justice Newby for taking time out of his busy day to come and visit our 4th Graders!
