Triangle Math and Science Academy FLL Robotics Competition

TMSA's Cyber Tigers Robotics Teams competed in the FLL state competition held in Greensboro on Saturday, January 11, 2014. Sixth and seventh grade team members, Afif R., Bram L., Ethan K., Aneesh S., Neil M., Zachary H., and Mustafa M., worked very hard, especially for the past couple of weeks, in preparation for this state competition. Nearly 400 students representing close to 50 teams from NC competed for a trip to FIRST Lego League World Festival in St. Louis. This is the first year that our TMSA Cyber Tigers team participated at the state level.

This year's theme was "Nature's Fury," and each team had to construct and program a robot that could perform a variety of tasks on a competition board representing the aftermath of a natural disaster. The tasks included rescuing people and pets, moving an ambulance and truck to a desired location, and keeping a runway clear for a cargo plane to land with relief materials. Each team also had to work on a project including a model and a skit showing how they would provide some form of preparation, response, or recovery from a natural disaster.
Prior to the competition, the team had an opportunity to present the Robot design and explain the Robot game and the project to engineers at iCube, which sponsored team shirts and banner.
The teams, coached by Mr. T, Mr. Mohammed, and Mr. Kim, traveled early morning to Greensboro in preparation for the competition. After several practices, the group met with judges who scored them on their project, their core values, and their robot design. Later, each team competed in three timed rounds of Robot run in front of a referee, with eight teams competing at once during each robot round. The gym was filled with nearly a thousand excited onlookers.
FLL and its competitions are primarily about working together as a team and solving problems. We are proud of the progress this team has made so far. This being the first year, the team was fortunate to experience the state competition. The team witnessed the awards ceremony, and gained insight into the other teams’ strengths. This experience was a steppingstone toward more challenging robotics programs at the high school level, and it will help them to achieve success in future competitions. Although the team did not win any trophies this time, the wealth of information and experience they acquired in this competition was extremely valuable.
Our special thanks go to the many parents who provided materials, supervised activities, prepared food, and cheered on these students. We appreciate your support and encouragement.
